Amelia Christmas Parade Cancelled

With Christmas coming up in just days, many people will be out shopping, going to church and enjoying family company. Some people may even sit outside and watch their local Christmas Parade. But this year citizens in the village of Amelia, Ohio, will not have the luxury of enjoying a Christmas parade.
The village of Amelia has hosted an annual parade every year for the past 28 years to celebrate Christmas and bring in the new year. The parade was mostly sponsored by local businesses.
But this year the parade has been cancelled, because Amelia has a threat of being sued because of the name Christmas Parade, which apparently raises the question of separation of church and state.
If the town is sued, Amelia could not afford any financial hit because of the lack of money. Last year citizens of Amelia had to vote to keep Amelia noted as a village and not part of Pierce County, so the village does not have money.
The mayor of Amelia, Leroy Ellington, had an idea that they should change the parade name to The Amelia Holiday Parade, but businesses in Amelia did not like the fact that it would not be called The Christmas Parade and decided not to be a part of the parade at all.
The Baptist church in Amelia, which is used to store floats and other parade items during the year, also decided not to take part in the parade unless the name was changed back to Christmas. So it looks pretty unlikely any parade will be in Amelia this year or years to come.
